Raleigh's new Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral was dedicated on July 26th. Designed by architect, James O'Brien and built by Clancy & Theys Construction Company, it seats 2,000 and is defined by its cruciform shape and large copper dome.
The interior of the Romanesque-inspired Cathedral features a purposeful lack of adornment - strikingly white decor which shows off the true architectural achievements of the building. The white walls make the marble furniture and flooring stand out with impressive beauty.
Henninger's was proud to have an important role in the interior decoration: the installation of all statuary and liturgical artwork.
The carving and painting of the statuary and liturgical artwork was executed by Ferdinand Stuflesser 1875 of Ortisei, Italy. In an eighteen month labor of love, their studio produced 27 statues of Saints and Angels, mostly 5'9" in height and two 6'8" statues of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph. Stuflesser also produced 2 crucifixes, 4 panels of Evangelist symbols, devotional images of Divine Mercy and Our Lady of Guadalupe, and one larger than life-size marble carved statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus for the exterior piazza. The following photos show the statues as they were completed, then crated in Italy.
Regarding the fabrication of these beautiful statues, Ferdinand Stuflesser 1875 commented:
"This was a very important work for
us. Not only the amount of statues, but also the big organization behind,
regarding carvers, communication between customer and artists and much more. It
was interesting and impressive to assist to the birth of such an important monument
which will give even more roots to the faith of the people in the area. We are
grateful to God to have been chosen for this glorious manifestation of faith."
Henninger's crew met these crates at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh, uncrated them, transported them and installed each statue and piece of liturgical art inside.
Working in a new Cathedral was a true thrill for us. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a part of such an important and massive project. A special thanks to the following:
